Travel with Steam Incorporated north from Kapiti via Palmerston North up the NIMT to the Gumboot Capital of Taihape in the heart of Rangitikei. Have a pre Easter escape by enjoying a full day of nostalgic rail travel and time to explore Taihape.
The journey includes crossing many impressive viaducts in the Mangaweka area including the South Rangitikei (300metre long & 80 metres high) and the Makohine viaducts.
The train will be hauled by one of our coal fired steam locomotives, either Ja1271 or Ab608. We will be using our classic red heritage carriages.
Tea, coffee, soft drinks and a selection of snacks will be available to purchase on the train. You are also welcome to bring your own food along. In the evening we are offering a preordered meal that will be served at Palmerston North on the return trip. This is expected to be a lasagne with salad plus a dessert. Cost $25.
During the journey we plan to make two stops to enable you to photograph the train in action. There will also be time for a leg stretch at Palmerston North in both directions and at Marton northbound, while the locomotive is serviced. At Taihape there will be the option of watching the locomotive being turned on the turntable in preparation for the return journey.
Most of our seats are double seats that can be “flipped” over to face the direction of travel. All seating is pre assigned.
