Mangaweka Express

Mangaweka Express

Start time: Saturday 7:40am (24 March)
End time: Saturday 8:30pm (24 March)

Travel with Steam Incorporated north from Kapiti via Palmerston North up the NIMT to the Gumboot Capital of Taihape in the heart of Rangitikei. Have a pre Easter escape by enjoying a full day of nostalgic rail travel and time to explore Taihape.

The journey includes crossing many impressive viaducts in the Mangaweka area including the South Rangitikei (300metre long & 80 metres high) and the Makohine viaducts.

The train will be hauled by one of our coal fired steam locomotives, either Ja1271 or Ab608. We will be using our classic red heritage carriages.

Tea, coffee, soft drinks and a selection of snacks will be available to purchase on the train. You are also welcome to bring your own food along. In the evening we are offering a preordered meal that will be served at Palmerston North on the return trip. This is expected to be a lasagne with salad plus a dessert. Cost $25.

During the journey we plan to make two stops to enable you to photograph the train in action. There will also be time for a leg stretch at Palmerston North in both directions and at Marton northbound, while the locomotive is serviced. At Taihape there will be the option of watching the locomotive being turned on the turntable in preparation for the return journey.

Most of our seats are double seats that can be “flipped” over to face the direction of travel. All seating is pre assigned.

Train fare ex Kapiti Stations Adult $149, Child $99. Ex Levin Adult $129, Child $79 or from Palmerston North/Feilding/Marton Adult $109, Child $59
Group discounts are available. 6% for 8 to 15 and 12% for over 16. We can also offer a special rate for booking a whole carriage. These have between 42 and 56 seats each. Group discount only applies when bookings made direct with Steam Incorporated and excludes payments by credit card.

At Taihape the town centre is just a short walk from the railway station. There are several cafes plus a selection of fast food outlets. There is an information centre based in the town hall and the nearby local museum will be open.

If you want to stretch your legs there is a couple of short walks available. One is Mt Stewart reserve which has a viewing platform at the top giving lovely views. This walk takes approx. only 20 minutes to the top.

Early booking advised. You can book online via our website or facebook page, by mail or phone 0800 783 264.

Tickets or seating info (for online bookings) will be issued in early March.
